Short answer: AZ-900 is one of the easiest cloud certifications you can take, and most candidates pass with two to four weeks of casual study. It is genuinely a foundational exam, written for people who have never opened the Azure portal. What surprises candidates is that "easy" does not mean "no studying." Microsoft asks specific service-name questions and a handful of light scenario questions, and skimming a single video course is exactly how people end up failing on attempt one.
If you can put in two to four focused weeks and run through a few hundred practice questions, AZ-900 is a high-confidence first-attempt pass.
What AZ-900 actually tests#
The exam is 40 to 60 questions, 60 minutes long, scored 1 to 1000 with a passing line at 700. Microsoft has not published an official pass rate for AZ-900, but third-party trackers consistently put first-attempt pass rates above 80 percent for candidates who studied with practice questions, and closer to 55 percent for candidates who only watched a course.
The format is more straightforward than AWS exams. You will see:
- "Which Azure service does X?" matching questions
- "Yes/No" sequences (3 statements; mark each true or false)
- "Drag the description to the matching service" questions
- Short scenario questions on cost management, identity, and shared responsibility
You will not see the deep "best fit" architecture questions that show up on AZ-104 or AZ-305. AZ-900 is a vocabulary and concepts exam, not an engineering exam.
The three domains and weights#
Microsoft splits the exam into three domains. The weights are published as ranges, which is normal for Microsoft fundamentals exams:
- Describe cloud concepts (25 to 30%). Cloud computing definitions, IaaS vs PaaS vs SaaS, public vs private vs hybrid, the shared responsibility model, benefits like elasticity and high availability. Mostly definitional. Easy points if you read the study guide once.
- Describe Azure architecture and services (35 to 40%). Regions, availability zones, resource groups, subscriptions, management groups, core compute (VMs, App Service, AKS, Container Apps, Functions), networking (VNets, peering, VPN, ExpressRoute), storage (Blob, Files, Disks, Queues, Tables), identity (Microsoft Entra ID, MFA, conditional access). The largest and most service-name-heavy domain.
- Describe Azure management and governance (30 to 35%). Cost management, Azure Pricing Calculator vs TCO Calculator, Azure Policy, Resource Locks, RBAC, Azure Portal vs CLI vs PowerShell vs ARM/Bicep, Azure Monitor, Azure Service Health, Azure Advisor.
Domain 2 is the largest. If you are short on time, drill compute, networking, and identity service names there.
How long real candidates study#
People who pass AZ-900 on the first try generally put in:
- 1 to 2 weeks if they already work with another cloud (AWS, GCP) or are a sysadmin
- 2 to 4 weeks if they are new to cloud but have any IT background
- 4 to 6 weeks if cloud and IT are both new (career switchers, students, non-technical PMs)
The pattern that works best on AZ-900 is roughly 50 percent practice questions, 30 percent Microsoft Learn modules (which are free and well-aligned to the exam), and 20 percent clicking around in the Azure Portal with a free trial account. Microsoft Learn matters more on AZ-900 than on most other vendor exams because the wording in the official modules matches the wording on the test.
The three things that surprise candidates#
- Service-name precision matters. AZ-900 will give you four similar names and ask which one does what. Azure Files vs Azure Blob, Azure Functions vs App Service, Microsoft Entra ID vs Azure AD B2C. Memorize the distinctions exactly.
- The shared responsibility model shows up everywhere. Expect at least three questions on what Microsoft is responsible for vs what you are responsible for, sliced across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. Drill this until it is reflexive.
- Cost management is bigger than people expect. TCO Calculator vs Pricing Calculator, reserved instances vs spot vs pay-as-you-go, budgets and alerts, the Azure Hybrid Benefit. Roughly a fifth of the test is cost-related.
Three sample questions to test yourself#
Click any answer to reveal the correct one and an explanation.
If you got 3 out of 3, you are essentially ready. If you got 1 or 2, you understand the concepts but need more reps on the precise service-name and tool-name distinctions Microsoft loves to test.
So is AZ-900 hard?#
It is not hard. It is the most beginner-friendly major cloud certification you can take. But "not hard" is not the same as "no preparation needed." The candidates who fail are almost always the ones who treated the exam as a formality, watched a 4-hour video, and walked in. The candidates who pass do 150 to 300 practice questions and click through Microsoft Learn for a couple of hours.
If you can put in two to four weeks of light, focused study with practice questions in the loop, AZ-900 is a confident first-try pass and a clean stepping stone toward AZ-104 or AZ-305.
