Short answer: yes, the Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104) is harder than the foundational AZ-900, but it is absolutely passable on the first attempt with focused prep. The difficulty is not in remembering services. It is in handling the case studies and lab simulations under time pressure, and in the depth Microsoft expects on identity, networking, and ARM/Bicep.

If you put in 6 to 8 weeks and lean heavy on hands-on practice in the Azure portal, the AZ-104 is well within reach. Here is what actually makes it hard, how long real candidates study, and three sample questions to test where you stand.

What the AZ-104 actually tests#

The exam is 40 to 60 questions in 100 minutes, scored 100 to 1000 with a passing line at 700. Cost is $165 USD per attempt. Microsoft does not publish official pass rates, but third-party data and our own ExamCoachAI user data put first-attempt pass rates around 70 to 75 percent for candidates who studied seriously.

The format mix is what makes it hard:

  • Multiple choice and multiple response. The bulk of the exam.
  • Drag and drop. Match services to scenarios, order configuration steps.
  • Case studies. A scenario with multiple questions, all referring back to the same setup. You can answer in any order.
  • Lab simulations. A live Azure portal where you complete real configuration tasks. These eat 10 to 20 minutes each.

Once you submit a lab, that is final. Plan your time so you have at least 25 minutes left when you reach the lab section.

What makes it hard (the five domains)#

The AZ-104 blueprint splits into five weighted domains:

  1. Manage Azure identities and governance (20 to 25%). Microsoft Entra ID, RBAC, subscriptions, management groups, Azure Policy, resource locks. RBAC scoping (subscription vs resource group vs resource) is heavily tested.
  2. Implement and manage storage (15 to 20%). Storage accounts, blob storage, Azure Files, SAS tokens, lifecycle policies, AzCopy. The storage tier choices (Hot, Cool, Cold, Archive) are a frequent trap.
  3. Deploy and manage compute resources (20 to 25%). Virtual machines, VM scale sets, ARM templates and Bicep, Container Instances, Container Apps, App Service. Bicep syntax shows up more in the latest version.
  4. Implement and manage virtual networking (15 to 20%). VNets, NSGs, peering, Bastion, Private Endpoints, Azure DNS, Load Balancer. Cross-region peering and NSG troubleshooting are the typical pain points.
  5. Monitor and maintain Azure resources (10 to 15%). Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Azure Backup, Site Recovery, Network Watcher. KQL queries appear in 1 or 2 questions.

The 20 to 25 percent identity and governance domain is where most retake candidates lose points, almost always on RBAC scope misunderstandings or Conditional Access policies.

How long most people study#

People who pass on the first try put in:

  • 6 to 8 weeks if they have prior cloud experience (AWS, GCP, or hands-on Azure at work)
  • 8 to 12 weeks if they are coming from a Windows sysadmin or on-prem virtualization background
  • 12 to 16 weeks if Azure is their first cloud and they are studying part-time around a full-time job

Inside that window, the ratio that works is roughly 40 percent practice questions, 20 percent video or reading, and 40 percent hands-on time in a free Azure account. The lab simulations make hands-on prep mandatory. You cannot pass by watching alone.

Microsoft retake policy#

If you fail on the first attempt, you must wait 24 hours before retaking. After your second fail, the wait jumps to 14 days, and the same 14-day wait applies to each subsequent attempt. There is a hard cap of 5 attempts per 12 months on the same exam. Each attempt is a full $165, so unprepared retakes get expensive fast.

Three sample questions to test yourself#

Click any answer to reveal the correct one and an explanation.

Sample question
Pick an answer
Your company has multiple development teams in Azure. Each team must be able to deploy resources only to their own resource group. The teams should not be able to view or modify resources owned by other teams. Which RBAC assignment best meets these requirements?
Sample question
Pick an answer
A company stores backup files in Azure Blob Storage. Files are written daily, never accessed unless there is a disaster, and must be retrievable within 15 hours when needed. Which access tier minimizes cost?
Sample question
Pick an answer
You configure VNet peering between VNet1 and VNet2 in the same Azure region. The peering status shows Connected on both sides, but VMs in VNet1 cannot reach VMs in VNet2. The address spaces do not overlap and the VMs are running. What is the most likely cause?

If you got 3 out of 3, you are tracking. If you missed one, the issue was probably RBAC scope (Contributor vs Owner) or NSG vs peering layering. Both are classic AZ-104 traps that the lab simulations love to test.

So is it hard?#

The AZ-104 is hard the first time you open a lab simulation and have to configure something real in 12 minutes. It stops feeling hard once you have done 5 full practice labs and your Azure portal muscle memory is automatic.

The candidates who fail are not the ones who lacked knowledge. They are the ones who watched 30 hours of video and never opened a free Azure account, or who skipped the case studies in their practice exams.

If you give yourself 6 to 8 weeks, spend at least a third of that time clicking through the actual Azure portal, and put in 600+ practice questions, the AZ-104 is well within reach.
